Celebrating Sally: Over 20 years of compassionate care at Dove Cottage

In this special interview, Sally reflects on her remarkable career as a nurse, sharing heartfelt memories, meaningful moments, and the experiences that have stayed with her throughout her time at the hospice. From the connections she has built with guests and their families to the impact of compassionate, person-centred care, her story offers a powerful insight into life at Dove Cottage.

How Sally came to join Dove Cottage

Sally first came to Dove Cottage through a friend from her church who volunteered there. Encouraged to apply, she was told she would be a perfect fit, and it quickly became clear that this was exactly where she was meant to be.

“I remember feeling an immediate sense of calmness and warmth,” Sally recalls. “There was laughter coming from the guest areas. It did not feel clinical. It felt welcoming and full of life.”

Caring had always been a natural path for Sally. From a young age, she supported her grandmother and helped care for foster babies within her family. These early experiences shaped her desire to make a difference in people’s lives by combining clinical knowledge with compassionate, hands-on care.

Being a part of Dove Cottage

What makes Dove Cottage so special, Sally explains, is its unique environment.

“It is very different from a hospital ward,” she says. “Here, you have the time to truly listen and be present with people.”

That time and space allows for moments that stay with you forever. One such memory stands out.

“There was an afternoon where guests, staff and volunteers danced and sang along to an Elvis song in memory of a fellow guest. There were tears in our eyes, but also so much love and joy as we celebrated his life.”

Dove Cottage also provides vital respite for carers and families, giving guests something to look forward to each week. It offers opportunities for connection, shared experiences, and friendship, often extending beyond the hospice itself. The team also advocates for guests and helps them navigate their healthcare needs with other professionals.
