Official statement from Dove Cottage Day Hospice

Dove Cottage Day Hospice has announced the difficult decision to close its charity shop in Cotgrave as part of a wider effort to safeguard the long-term future of its hospice services and ensure vital care continues for local families living with life-limiting conditions.

Following a comprehensive review of all income-generating activities and associated costs, the hospice has concluded that the overheads required to operate the Cotgrave shop now exceed the income it generates. As a result, the charity has taken the difficult but necessary decision to focus its limited resources where they can deliver the greatest benefit to patient care.

Retail Lead Tim Knight acknowledged the impact the closure will have on staff, volunteers, customers and supporters, and thanked everyone who has contributed to the shop's success over the years.

“Like many other hospices across the UK, we are facing increasing financial pressures and unprecedented challenges to our funding streams. Our charity shops play an important role in supporting hospice services, but we simply cannot sustain operations that continue to operate at a loss. Every pound lost has a direct impact on the care and support we provide to local families.”

“Whilst the Cotgrave shop has a loyal customer base and dedicated volunteers, it is no longer generating sufficient income to cover its costs. This has been an incredibly difficult decision, but one that has been made to ensure our resources are spent where they will have the greatest impact – supporting patients and families when they need us most.”

Dove Cottage Day Hospice currently operates shops in Asfordby, Bottesford and Stathern, all of which will remain open and continue serving their local communities. The charity's online retail presence through Vinted and eBay will also continue trading.

The closure comes at a time when hospices nationwide are experiencing significant financial challenges, with rising costs and increasing demand for services placing unprecedented pressure on charitable income.

“Closing the doors of the Cotgrave shop is not something we wanted to do, but it is a necessary step to help secure the future of our hospice. The reality is that less than 4% of our funding comes from the NHS. The remaining 96% must be raised through donations, fundraising activities, grants, community support and retail income.”

“Over recent years, we have seen a decline in community fundraising income whilst operational costs continue to rise. To ensure we can continue delivering compassionate end-of-life and wellbeing services to local families, we must reduce unnecessary expenditure and strengthen more reliable sources of income.”

Urgent appeal for regular donors

As the charity prepares to close the Cotgrave shop, Dove Cottage is making an urgent appeal to local residents, businesses and supporters to consider making a regular monthly donation.

Regular giving provides the hospice with a stable and predictable source of income, enabling it to plan services, invest in patient care and continue supporting families facing some of life's most challenging circumstances.

“The closure of the Cotgrave shop highlights the financial reality facing our hospice. We are asking anyone who values the care we provide to consider becoming a regular donor. Even a small monthly gift can make a significant difference and help ensure that local families continue to receive the compassionate care and support they deserve.”
